This last April my wife and I were lucky to visit Amsterdam for a week. One of the great things to enjoy while there is a trip through the Amsterdam canals. A boat ride was offered as part of the Hollandpass, which we took with great expectations. The boat ride begins up by the central station. This was a quite chilly day in early April, and we had to wait in line for a boat to arrive to board. Here's central station:
Once a boat arrived, we realized that you had to purchase or redeem tickets first, which wasn't a problem for us, since they still let us board.
Once we got on the boat it started to rain a little bit.
Though cold weather doesn't stop the Dutch from enjoying their Stroopbier:
The boat included an audiotour, which was roughly 13 different languages that kept cycling through. It got to be quite tedious. But at least the boat was covered and warm...
Though we quickly fell asleep, as did most people in the boat.
Here's Amsterdam Central Station from below:
Luckily we weren't on one of these open-air boats...
We'd need a lot of Stroop to feel warm on these ones!
In the bay, you can see a glorious homage to Chinese culture.
It's the Sea Palace Chin Restaurant:
Though we recommend going to Chinatown to eat.
The Amsterdam Port is is quite lovely. Here's the science museum:
The Conservatorium:
There are canals throughout most of Dutch cities-
Here are some boats:
Big boats, little boats:
The bridges are counter-weighted in the Netherlands, so one person could easily open them:
~ 50 % of the Netherlands is 1 m below sea level.
The Dutch have spent hundreds of years claiming land from the sea.
Indeed ~ 17 % of the land in the Netherlands was once under the sea.
This spirit of organization has led the Dutch to do amazing things.
Dutch and English are very similar. This says "Every day drinking is also a regular life."
The Dutch do indeed drink a lot. Here's some angry blonde teens:
And some ducks instead of cat-tax:
