Cascais is a beautiful port town just West of Lisbon, on the mouth of the river Tagus. Just slightly northwest is the Cabo Da Roca, the most western point of continental Europe. Also nearby is the "Boca do Inferno," or "Hell's Mouth," in English. The Hell's Mouth is a chasm with access to the sea below:
All three of these sights are a short distance from Lisbon. We did them all in one trip, along with the Pena Palace and the Sintra National Palace.I recommend spending a little more time in Sintra, even staying there a night if you have time.
When the waves are strong, apparently water will shoot up out of the chasm.
Unfortunately the sea was calm when we visited. But you can see quite beautiful coastal cliffs.
There are some interesting rock formations.
You can see some nice cliffs.
It was a little cold so I didn't.
My wife however wanted a nice selfie, so she dove into the freezing water, swimming furiously to the mouth of the chasm.
She used her Portuguese selfie-stick to take a nice snap.
Unfortunately she accidently deleted her selfie when drunk on Port in Oporto.
One guy caught a small fish
Portuguese fish are delicious!
Cabo Da Roca is the Westernmost point of continental Europe (this doesn't count the UK, Ireland, the Faroes, Iceland, Greenland, etc.).
The coastal landscape is windswept, and generally barren of trees.
It's quite beautiful, but windy!!
And the sea doesn't look too inviting.
There's a little totem indicating the Cabo Da Roca, so you can get a nice tourist snap.
There's not much to explore there beyond that, but perhaps some hiking on warmer days.
Along the coast you can see some of the beautiful Portuguese beaches.
The town of Cascais is also quite beautiful seaside village. Actually a train goes there from Lisbon and some people commute, sort of like a suburb of Lisbon.
There's a beautiful port in Cascais.
Also they have some beautiful buildings.
Everyone loves photos of boats!Something about the sea...
A stoic Portuguese mother awaits the return of the Great Navigator who will envelop the world in Azulejos.
Big boats, small boats, Portuguese love boats!
Fishing boats, shipping boats, slaving boats, Portuguese love boats!
Fishing is still an important part of the Portuguese economy though it has decreased over the last few decades significantly.
These cages are used to catch street cats to sell to cat butchers in Asturias.
Cascais is very beautiful.
I bet in the summer it's better, because you can relax on the beach, eat some fish, walk around the town, etc..
In Cascais there is a statue of King Luis, a monarch who was rumored to have eaten a whole Mozambique hippopotamus during a royal visit to Maputo.
King Luis was most famous for his extremely large bathtub, which was turned into the Lisbon Vasco Da Gama Aquarium.
Cascais is a good place to have a nice meal and walk around the town.More pictures of boats.
Why not, boats are awesome!
Portugal is such a beautiful country.
Although here I was worried for a second I was back in Tel Aviv.
Ahhh! Shabbat Shalom!
